March 1:
Today we get packed up and ready for the very long drive
ahead of us. We are being a bit
ambitious in that we really want to be able to spend a good 4 days without
having to travel much at all and this will be our last push here in
Australia. We get underway and after
about 3 hours we stop for gas and pick up some greasy snacks…fish n chips, a
Ham & Cheese toastie, etc….we pig out in the car and keep on trucking. We make great time and Paulie does a fabulous
job of getting us there in record time.
As we approach Cairns, we see the effects of the weeks of rain. The fields are flooded to the point of almost
spilling over onto the roads and in a couple of places its pretty ify as to
whether or not the bridges will soon be inundated. We are able to cross over and arrive on the
outskirts of town around 3:30 in the afternoon.
As we approach the town, the kids spy a water park to the left of our
car and then we see it is actually a Holiday Park where we can stay
too…..YEA!. We pull in to check availability
and pricing and are able to swing it. We
get checked in and unpacked. It is quite
a compact space. We have developed an
ability to survive in tight spaces, but have recently experienced the luxury of
having more space so this feels like taking a step backward. We head out to the local grocery store which
interestingly is located inside the mall.
Annie is pleased J We park and wind through a number of shops
before we can even locate the grocery store.
We make our purchases and return home.
The kids are off to the pool and we join them briefly, before settling
in for the night. In order to put the
kids to bed we have to break apart one single bed and roll out the mattress
underneath and unfold the adjacent sofa to make a bed for Annie. At this rate there is no room to even turn
around in the “living area” so we all call it a night and hunker down.
