Tiny cabin in Cairns

March 2

We awaken refreshed and have slept surprisingly late for us.  Must have needed the sleep.  I make us coffee and we try to walk around the sleeping children to go outside to check out email.  The internet connection is so poor most places we have been in Australia, that we generally end up standing in the middle of the street or driveway to get any reception at all.  Once we awaken the kids, we get our breakfast and organize ourselves for a foray into the town of Cairns.  Hudson opts to stay at home to have a little R&R from the family while the rest of us venture out.  We find our way into the center of town and luckily meet up with a meter maid that advises us to take advantage of free parking at the mall.  We do.  After parking, of course we have to walk through the mall to get out the other side.  Annie and Sam are all adither and we spend a good hour or two obliging them.  Once out into the bright sunny day, we walk around town.  There is a lot to see here with very interesting shops and restaurants lining the avenues.  It is a great walking town and we soon discover an alley with great second hand shops and vintage boutiques.  We check out the bookstore and a couple of shops when the skies open up and start pouring down rain.  We duck into a Swiss bakery (great place of refuge!) and treat ourselves to a few goodies.  We continue our walkabout town and finally end up at the local market, Rusty’s.  This is an open air market with vendors selling the most luscious array of fruits and veggies.  Annie and I walk around and sample the mangoes, apples, nectarines, peaches, grapes, watermelons, pineapples and avocadoes.  We are pretty stuffed when we return to Paulie and Sam and see they have ordered Japanese food from a food truck.  There meal looks yummy too so we offer to help them finish.  Afterward, we walk around a bit more and then return to the cabin to rest up.  We end our day with a light meal and a movie afterward.
