Fiji-January 15

January 15

After another great breakfast and several hours of instruction, we go to the pool for a swim.  The weather is beautiful and I have never seen a sky as blue as this one.  We basically hang out and eat leftovers for lunch before getting in the car to go for a drive.  We are headed to an exclusive part of the island known as Denerau Island.  It is a bit of reclaimed land on which luxury resorts have been built and it is connected to the mainland by a secured bridge.  We drive through downtown Nadi and head out the other side down some winding roads until we reach the guard station.  We pass through and feel like we are in an alternate reality.  Groomed lawns, lovely rolling hills of golf courses, gated homes (and I mean wrought-iron), tidy streets and finally high end shops with price tags to match.  We enter the carpark (going the wrong direction) and finally get it right.  These brightly lit and air conditioned shops stand in sharp contrast to where we have been in Nadi and Sigotoka.  It is as if this could be anywhere in the world and the generic, plastic, overpriced nature is really off-putting to Paulie and me.  The kids, on the other hand, have now found something familiar that they can relate to.  We might as well be at Crabtree….add a couple of palm trees…..except the prices.  Sunblock goes for FJD$34 or USD$25….no thanks!  We browse and return to our car for a grocery trip in the part of town we came from.  We ride home and again cool off in the pool for a while.  Reading and Journaling comes next with a home-made dinner of Chicken, Rice and Veggies served up shortly after.  Since our dive trip is tomorrow, we go to bed around 9:30. Sweet dreams.
